The summer months are when Paris truly comes alive! As all the Parisians begin to trickle out for their month-long August vacation, the city becomes a calm oasis for the traveler looking to relax in the City of Light. You’ll be able to enjoy all that Paris has to offer, including outdoor sports activities, shady terraces, and movies under the stars without the crowds, noise, and stress of the normally bustling city. We here at ParisByM want to ensure that you enjoy the best Paris has to offer and have compiled a list of our favorite summer activities in Paris.
A MOVIE UNDER THE STARS!
What can be better than to spend a few hours coiled up in a deck chair while enjoying a good movie on a warm summer night? Each summer, Paris transforms into a giant outdoor cinema. This year, you will be able to enjoy one of 11 outdoor screenings under the stars from July 24th to August 9th 2016. From classics to more recent films, there’s something for visitors of all ages during the highly-anticipated return of moonlight movies!
On the menu this year: “Drôle de Frimousse”, “Bancs Publics”, “Les Adieux à la Reine”, “Touchez pas Au Grisbi”, “Seuls two”, “Le petit Nicolas”, “Frantic”, “Ninotchka”, “La Grande Vadrouille”, “La Môme”, “Quoi de neuf Pussycat?”.
Among others, the Parc de La Villette will transform from July 22nd to August 23rd into a spectacular outdoor cinema with a different film playing almost every night. Don’t forget to bring a sweater, as summer nights can get a little chilly.
AN ATHLETIC SUMMER!
If you’re looking to beat the summer heat, check out one of Paris’s many pools dotting the city. Most summer activities in Paris are held during the summer and some pools have even opened their roof to let you swim outdoors! Summer swimmers are welcome from Monday through Sunday and, with some pools opening at 7am and closing at 8pm or even 10pm in some cases, you’re sure to find a time that suits even the busiest of schedules.
There is also Les Berges de Seine which offer an exclusively pedestrian path of over 1 mile along the Seine left bank where your can practice some activities including coaching sessions (boxing, jump rope, running) and also street tennis and the traditional French game pétanque.
Best of all, all those summer activities in Paris are free !
WHAT WOULD SUMMER BE WITHOUT A BIT OF BEACH?
SO ROMANTIC TO DANCE IN PARIS!
Throughout the summer, Paris comes alive with music and dance parties around every corner. Many venues offer weekend dance parties, including La Guinguette Eiffel Tower, where you can dance on a 650 square meter open air terrace every Friday night starting at 7pm.
Program: DJ sets, tapas, cocktails and rosé wine for a festive and convivial evening.
In the 19th district, Rosa Bonheur has revived the Guinguette spirit in the heart of the Buttes Chaumont Park. Eat, drink and dance at this lively neighborhood party.
At the foot of the National Assembly, in front of the Place de la Concorde, the Concorde Atlantique boat offers a terrace with stunning views of the Grand Palais, the Tuileries gardens and Orsay museum, which hosts theme nights throughout summer : latin, funk … there’s something for everyone!
Last but not least: less official, but all the more nice, you can also meet people gathering for a tango, a valse, or any kind of dance on the river banks, at the level of the Arabic World Institute (Institut du Monde Arabe). Just show up and take your chance!
BACK TO CHILDHOOD!
Close to Paris is of course the famous Disneyland Paris park, a magical place for both adults and children alike. Each year brings some special show and experience. In 2016, between June 4th and September 18th, the Snow Queen and her friends will be at the park! For a frostier summer experience, come visit these Disney Characters in a refreshing French atmosphere! And for even more magic, come sing along with Elsa, Anna and Olaf at a wonderful interactive show!
A little further from Paris, the Parc Asterix is another great option for thrilling sensations. Situated 40 minutes from the city, it offers many attractions as well as live shows to discover with friends or family. Featuring several spectacular roller coasters, it’s the perfect park for adults looking for a thrill!
For a more cultural discovery, another option is the park France Minitatures. In a park the same shape as France itself, the park presents all the iconic monuments and sites of France on a reduced scale. In less than 30 minutes, you can take a selfy of youself beside the Eiffel Tower, the castles of the Loire Valley and the Mont Saint Michel! An ideal discovery if you are on a tight schedule but still want to see most of France…
And to entertain really young children (1 to 5 year old approximately), why not go to the Jardin d’Acclimatation? Located at the gates of the Bois de Boulogne, it offers attractions accessible to the youngest ones, like a little train, an enchanted river or a mini farm where kids will be delighted to see donkeys, cows, sheeps and a wide variety of birds.
FOR NATURE AND ANIMAL LOVERS!
For nature lovers, the different zoos of Paris will answer your longing for green spaces. You can visit the Zoo de Vincennes : savannah of the Sahel – Sudan plains, rocky shores and the pampas of Patagonia, forests of tall European conifers, and tropical climates of Guyana and Madagascar. The Zoo de Vincennes is the largest zoo in Paris and the most famous Parisian place where you can see animals!
Close to the Gare d’Austerlitz, the famous Jardin des Plantes is another nice option to see the wild life. In the garden you will find a large number of plant species. But don’t worry, they’re all labeled and easy to identify! To see the mammals, birds and reptiles, you’ll have to buy a ticket.
