Paris attraction #1 – Eiffel tower

More than seven million people visit the Eiffel Tower each year, making this monument one of the most visited places worldwide among tourists. You have so many ways to discover the Iron Lady: from climbing the stairs during the day to taking the elevator at night. The Eiffel tower is a unique landmark in Paris and you will be able to see its 324m from almost everywhere around Paris.

Visit the Eiffel Tower

Elevators are located the North, West and East pillars to the tower’s three platforms. You can change lifts on the 2nd level for the final ascent to the top (3rd floor), from where views extend to more than 50km. There’s a wheelchair access to the 1st and 2nd levels. Alternatively you can go to the South pillar to climb the 1665 stairs to the 2nd level.

You should book your tickets in advance online to avoid long ticket queues (30 minutes in low season, to 3 hours in busy season). There are refreshments and lunch options in the Eiffel Tower: 1st-level 58 Tour Eiffel, or New Bar à Champagne (3rd floor). If you want a luxury restaurant, you can go to the 2nd-level Le Jules Verne, a 3-star Michelin guide restaurant (~400€ / person for a full dinner with wine, only with reservation well in advance).

Within the Eiffel tower

From any of the 2 platforms, you will get an astonishing 360° view over Paris: Montmartre hills in the North, La Défense towers (business district) in the West, very close Trocadero and Champs de Mars, the Seine River, Notre Dame cathedral… Try to recognize most of the monuments you will visit or already have visited. As for the structure itself, the platforms, elevators and stairs offer ideal views for seeing the iron components that constitute the structure.

Who should visit the Eiffel tower?

From kids to grand-parents, everyone can and should climb the tower at least once! If you are a newcomer to Paris and are staying more than 2 days, you should definitely visit the Eiffel Tower. This is a unique experience, and even if it sounds classic you can not go to Paris without climbing the Eiffel Tower at least once in your lifetime. If you come to Paris only once in your life, do not miss this opportunity. Even if you are coming for a very short stay (1 or 2 days), take this opportunity to visit it.

Eiffel tower’s history

No one could imagine Paris today without its signature spire. Gustave Eiffel constructed the tower in 1889 for the World’s Fair. The tower was not expected to be permanent but luckily, the tower’s popularity assured its survival beyond the fair. Its elegant art nouveau webbed-metal design has become the defining fixture of the city’s skyline.

The Eiffel Tower was in fact designed by Maurice Koechlin and Émile Noguier, two senior engineers working for the Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel. They discussed a suitable centre piece for the 1889 World’s Fair to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution. Gustave Eiffel openly acknowledged that inspiration for the tower came from the Latting Observatory built in New York City in 1853.
